10 Essential Tips to a Stress-free Holiday

I have heard of many people come back from a holiday trip extremely knackered. Holiday-induced stress is very common if people fail to appropriately plan before they travel. Below are 10 essential tips for a stress-free holiday.

01. Knowledge

Know about the inside out of the area, location and community of where you are going way in advance. Thanks to Google, information is literally on the click of a button. You ask a question = you get an answer. Setting up crystal clear holiday priorities ensures a pleasant holiday.

Thank God for sites such as TripAdvisor and Trivago just to name a few. Such websites share useful ratings that assist tourists with an insight of place before actually visiting. Visitors are able to investigate areas and see if what they are hoping to find is available through ratings and reviews shared.

Knowing the community of that area is a bonus. Respecting community values and culture e.g. the way they dress is also key. Some tourists are fined or prosecuted for trivial things such as public indecency threw failure to abide by some countries’ culture. A point often overlooked is the fact that what I may call trivial might be extremely offensive in other countries.

02. The Easier,  The better

Simplify to-do-things, activities or targets. This is a simple way to avoid stress and anxiety. Yes, there are now things called inbuilt-car navigating system or phone apps to help with directions but at times a hardcopy map may come hand. This is normally the case when the phone battery dies or when the inbuilt-car sate-navigator is not automatically updated to pick up foreign destinations. Many people have expressed extremely bad experiences when one of the above scenarios has occurred to them.

If going away for a few or many days, a holiday can be simplified by just having a clear to-do-list. This is normally easy when one has full knowledge of where they are going and know the exact locations to be visited.

A to-do-list also saves heartaches when coming back home only to realise there was an amazing location that could have been visited but was forgotten.

Weekend To-Do List Example

With a to-do list, a targeted location could never be missed. Always bearing in mind that every single activity should be enjoyable and not seen as a chore. I have created an easy to follow to-do list above. I have even put time slots as a guide to keep up to date with time management.

Every single activity must be joyful. Knowing exactly what is going to take place will also lead to the next tip below.

03. Suitable Clothing

Types of shoes

Types of shoes

Holiday destinations differ in so many ways that suitable clothing should never be taken for granted. I guess this is a no brainer but some people never cease to amaze. I have seen people wearing heels at the beach or hiking mountain, wearing flip-flops. Appropriate clothing from head to toes is crucial. Wrong choices might end up resulting in unnecessary stress that can be easily avoided.

04. Mode of Transport Used

The type of transport going to be used is definitely one of the 10 essential tips to a stress-free holiday. Weight luggage and adhering to baggage restrictions is extremely important when flying. There is no painful thing such as paying for extra baggage on the onset of your journey at the airport. Always aim to avoid excess-baggage charges but enjoy that money on a great holiday instead.

This applies when using other forms of public transport as well such as trains, coaches, ferries etc. If going hiking, think of what type of bags to carry and how much clothing to pack.

If driving, then you might even have room to pack your kitchen sink. But again, before setting off, it is small things like checking fuel, checking the condition of the car should not be taken for granted.

10 Essential Tips to a Stress-free Holiday

If using things like motor-vans or caravans, make sure that all the plugins or connections are all in place and not to start running around on the day. If things need testing and connecting, to have a stress-free journey checking days before is always advised. Unless if hired from somewhere, then prior checks will have been carried out already.

05. Food and drinks.

There are apps, books and even meditation on mindful eating. With the all you can eat buffet hotels there is a need to be careful as to how much food to one consumes per day later on for the whole duration of the holiday. Sometimes too much food can result in fatigue leading to less enjoyment of the holiday. Look at portion sizes and if going to drive drink reasonable and avoid going above the limit. Avoid the overindulgence on food and drink.

06. Sleep

The National Sleep Foundation (NSF) issued its new recommendations for appropriated sleeping durations. Recommendations differ from age to age as summarised below:

  • New-borns (0-3 months): Sleep range narrowed to 14-17 hours each day (previously it was 12-18)
  • Infants (4-11 months): Sleep range widened two hours to 12-15 hours (previously it was 14-15)
  • Toddlers (1-2 years): Sleep range widened by one hour to 11-14 hours (previously it was 12-14)
  • Pre-schoolers (3-5): Sleep range widened by one hour to 10-13 hours (previously it was 11-13)
  • School-age children (6-13): Sleep range widened by one hour to 9-11 hours (previously it was 10-11)
  • Teenagers (14-17): Sleep range widened by one hour to 8-10 hours (previously it was 8.5-9.5)
  • Younger adults (18-25): Sleep range is 7-9 hours (new age category)
  • Adults (26-64): Sleep range did not change and remains 7-9 hours
  • Older adults (65+): Sleep range is 7-8 hours (new age category)

Normally I need my 8-hour sleep in order for me to function well during the day. My mind performs clearer when I sleep well. But wake up with a headache and body pains if I do not sleep well.

7. Be prepared for whatever happens.

No matter how much prepared or perfectionist one can be, life can be full of surprises, on the other hand. It is always advisable to always have a ‘Plan B’ in life just in case anything goes wrong. It could weather changes. Or the community turns out to be less vibrant as what Google told you. Or a hotel room is not as 5 Star as the pictures on their website. Such things would not steal your joy if prepared to improvise in as much as possible. Even when things go wrong, try to laugh about it and not be grumpy or critical.

8. Budgeting

This includes the good, the best and the worst list of activities from previous holiday experiences. In this case, the best moments and activities are always repeated while at the same time making sure that the worst is avoided possibly. Having such an open-mind in advance prepares the brain to automatically look forward to a brilliant holiday as everything is planned.
